Scope first. Estimate second.
What shapes
the price?
A locksmith estimate depends on the actual job. A working door that needs a new key arrangement is different from damaged hardware or a replacement vehicle key. Call with the details so the estimate can reflect the work you need.
Ask for the complete scope.
Before agreeing to a visit, ask whether the estimate includes a service-call charge, labor, parts, programming and any applicable additional charges. Clarify what can be assessed over the phone and what depends on inspecting the door or vehicle.
No fixed price or price range is published here. Ask for a job-specific estimate and the conditions that could change it. If the diagnosis or requested work changes, review the revised scope and cost before approving the additional work.
Discuss your job
Different jobs. Different inputs.
House or business lockout
The lock type, door condition, number of affected openings and access arrangements matter. Say whether the key is missing, locked inside or broken, and whether damage is already present. Confirm the proposed method and any replacement parts before authorizing them.
Rekeying several locks
Count the cylinders and explain the desired key arrangement. Front, rear and separate unit entrances may use different hardware. Compatible usable cylinders may be rekeyed; damaged or incompatible hardware may need another approach. Shared or managed access requires the appropriate authorization.
Repair or installation
Hardware condition, door preparation, parts availability and the product selected affect the job. A replacement that fits existing preparation differs from work that requires alterations. Ask whether door or frame work is included or needs a separate specialist.
Automotive keys
Give the vehicle year, make and model, key type and whether any working key remains. Cutting a blade and programming an electronic key are separate tasks. Confirm the supported vehicle and key function, the equipment needed and what testing is included.
Make comparisons on the same basis.
When comparing estimates, compare the same doors, parts and requested outcome. A total that omits parts or only covers the initial visit is not directly comparable to an estimate that includes the whole agreed job. Ask what remains uncertain and who will approve a change.
After the work, keep the invoice and any product information provided. Check the agreed keys, codes or remote functions and ask about the terms that apply to the specific parts and work. Do not assume a universal warranty or payment option; confirm those details directly.
